Mommy Makeover Recovery. What Northwest Arkansas Moms Should KnowBy Michael L. Spann, MD | Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon | November 2, 2026
How long does it really take to recover from a mommy makeover? Most moms undergoing a combined procedure that includes a tummy tuck with abdominal muscle repair can return to light activities rather soon—say, one to two weeks. However, really getting back to full routines, lifting kids, and resuming strenuous exercise used to be restricted for approximately six weeks.
That is no longer the case for our patients. At Spann MD Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, we have developed advanced protocols and surgical techniques to make recovery far more manageable and get women back to their daily lives sooner.
For mothers in Bentonville, Rogers, Fayetteville, Springdale, and throughout Northwest Arkansas (NWA), the biggest concern often isn't the surgery itself.
It's what happens when they get home.
There is one question that stops more mommy makeovers than the price tag ever could:
"Who is going to take care of my kids while I'm recovering from surgery?"
Nobody usually asks it quite that bluntly during an initial consultation.
In my consultation room, it usually sounds more like, "I just don't have a good window right now," or "Maybe when the kids are a little older." But after years of performing cosmetic surgery, I've learned to recognize what's really behind those statements.
You're picturing yourself on the couch, foggy from prescription pain pills, unable to pick up your toddler, while your spouse uses vacation days and your mother moves into the guest room. The laundry still needs doing, someone still has to get the kids to school, and dinner doesn't magically appear.
For a long time, that picture was fairly accurate. But one of the biggest changes I've made in my practice has been completely rethinking how we manage recovery and pain following body contouring procedures.
After watching my own wife go through recovery, I developed a multimodal recovery protocol designed to make traditional narcotic pain medication unnecessary for many patients. While we haven't found a way around the biology of healing—the physical restrictions of surgery are still real—the experience of getting through those first several days can be very different.
For the busy moms I see across Northwest Arkansas, that changes everything.
A mommy makeover is a customized combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to address the physical changes in the breasts and abdomen following pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and weight fluctuations.
It isn't a one-size-fits-all operation. Depending on your anatomy and personal goals, a custom plan may include:
I typically combine abdominal contouring with breast surgery, but I don't believe every woman needs every procedure. My job during your consultation is to determine what will produce the best aesthetic result with the least amount of unnecessary surgery.
When planning your timeline, one procedure usually dictates the recovery path: the tummy tuck. While breast procedures involve shorter initial recoveries, tightening the abdominal wall is a more substantial operation that requires thoughtful advance planning.
Absolutely YES. An opioid-free recovery is possible for selected mommy makeover patients.
In my practice, we use a multimodal pain management protocol that combines targeted abdominal wall nerve blocks, non-opioid medications, and early mobilization to significantly reduce or eliminate the need for narcotics.
One of the key medications we've incorporated into our protocol is suzetrigine (sold under the brand name Journavx).Approved by the FDA in January 2025 for moderate-to-severe acute pain, suzetrigine represents a major leap forward in postoperative care.
While non-opioid medications still carry individual risks and are not a "magic pill," using them as part of a comprehensive strategy allows moms to remain present and alert during their home recovery.
Rather than depending on a single medication, my recovery protocol combines several treatments that work synergistically:
We have been formally evaluating our experience with this multimodal approach in abdominoplasty patients, and our encouraging initial findings have been submitted for peer-reviewed publication.
A Note on Expectations: Opioid-free does not mean pain-free. A tummy tuck with muscle repair is a major operation, and the first two to three days will bring discomfort. If a patient requires rescue analgesia, we reassess and adjust treatment immediately. My goal isn't to prove someone can endure surgery without narcotics—it's to provide excellent pain control while minimizing unnecessary opioid exposure.
This general timeline outlines what patients can expect following a full mommy makeover (tummy tuck with muscle repair combined with breast surgery).

You will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay in the house with you. You will walk slightly bent at the waist to protect the abdominal incision and sleep with your head and knees elevated.
These are typically the most uncomfortable days. Your abdomen will feel tight, and standing upright takes effort. You'll be taking short walks around the house, but no lifting is permitted—this includes toddlers, car seats, and laundry baskets. However, because our opioid-sparing protocol keeps you alert, you can sit with your kids, help with homework, and read stories together without feeling sedated.
By the end of week one, movement becomes easier, personal care is manageable, and you will begin standing straighter. While feeling better is encouraging, physical lifting restrictions remain strictly in place to protect the internal muscle repair.
Light household tasks and desk work can often resume. You may be cleared to drive once you are completely off impairing medications and can comfortably make a sudden emergency stop without hesitation.
You will feel much more independent, but remember: feeling fine and being fully healed are different things. We must continue protecting the abdominal wall repair during this critical healing phase.
For patients with uncomplicated healing, week six is when we typically clear you to resume heavy lifting (including toddlers) and more demanding physical activities.
Core exercises and regular workouts can be gradually reintroduced under medical guidance. While swelling continues to diminish over several months, final surgical results mature between six months to a year.
Planning ahead is the key to a seamless recovery:
Timing your surgery properly ensures optimal aesthetic longevity and a stress-free recovery:
Most patients require 1 to 2 weeks before returning to light daily activities and desk work. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise are restricted for approximately 6 weeks, with full result maturation taking 6 to 12 months.
If your surgery includes abdominal muscle repair, you should avoid lifting children or heavy items for 6 weeks to protect the internal suturing.
Yes. Using our multimodal pain management strategy—combining long-acting nerve blocks, non-opioid medications like suzetrigine (Journavx), and early movement—many patients successfully recover without traditional opioids.
Most patients resume driving during the second week, provided they are no longer taking any prescription medications that impair reflexes and can make an emergency stop without pain restriction.
